Katya talks you through her experience with us on the Easter Revision Course 2025, to give you valuable insights to what you can expect and how you can best prepare for a residential revision course with OXSS.

English Literature Revision Course

What's it like to join a Revision Course with OXSS?

Are you curious about the immersive world of the OXSS Revision Course, where academic rigor meets teenagers? As both a house parent and English tutor, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the unique journey of course participants as they navigate through the challenges and joys of exam preparation. I have seen firsthand what dedication they show to their education, and how students push themselves to engage with new people and make the most out of a diverse and vibrant study environment.

While at the heart of OXSS, there is an impetus of helping bright students achieve academic success, the courses offer far more nuanced experiences than this.

The following should give you a better insight into life on an OXSS course and demonstrate that there is a place for every type of student.

Arrival and Initial Impressions

Entering the OXSS Revision Course can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially for those arriving alone. The halls buzz with a mix of excitement and apprehension as students unpack their essentials. Some bring comically oversized “BOOK bags,” filled with enough study material to rival a small library – while others seem to pack half their bedroom, including an impressive collection of fuzzy socks and the latest skincare essentials. It’s a testament to their dedication to both academics and self-care.

For many, making friends is a primary concern. You never know who you’ll meet, what their interests are, or if your roommates will be fellow late-night study warriors or early morning yoga enthusiasts. Whatever the case may be, everyone is generally in the same boat. Eager to dive into revision and forge new connections. There’s no room for drama or negativity. Trust us on this. You will be mentally zapped after a day of equations; sample essays; critical reading, or language learning. More likely than not, you will have some days where you may be full of social energy and wanting to be at the heart of every social engagement. Other days, you will just want to stick on some tunes and crack on making flashcards. No day is the same, nor is any week. I can say from experience that nobody cares at all what you choose. Of course, new friends will be eager to see your face, but everyone has something to get on with at some point. So – take some time to chill, and don’t worry about fomo. ‘Fear’ is an emotion only you give agency to, and as I said before, you will be FAR too drained from revision to care about that sort of thing!

It may sound cheesy, but this course is all about supporting one another and celebrating each other’s successes.

Packing for Success

When it comes to packing, comfort is key. Think cosy loungewear for late-night study sessions, favorite PJs for winding down, and of course, that lucky pen or study playlist that helps you stay focused. And don’t forget to bring a bit of your personality – whether it’s a quirky hat, a beloved stuffed animal for moral support during tough subjects, or your trusty collection of highlighters for those color-coded notes.

Some examples of useful things to bring:

Whiteboard pens: There are whiteboards in some of the rooms and common rooms, which are great resources to use for revision or note making. You can use them to test yourself on the day’s key points, or write up important memos to yourself. Heck, you can even use them for a game of noughts and crosses with your roommate! Though I’m sure you can get much more creative with game ideas than that!

Textbooks and Revision Guides: Essential for studying and referencing during tutorials. We will give you access to exam questions, but it is important you have a laptop or tablet to access these on.

Tablet or Laptop: Loaded with revision materials, ebooks, and useful apps for studying. Bring what valuables you are comfortable with but remember you’ll need to keep it safe!

Pens, Pencils, and Highlighters: Different colors can help with organizing notes and highlighting key information.  Students of this Easter Revision Course (2025) were lucky enough to receive a tote bag with sticky notes, a BIC pen and multi-colour highlighter, courtesy of OXSS, as some handy ‘tools’ to have throughout the course.

Notebooks or Notepads: For taking notes during tutorials and independent study sessions.

Flashcards: Great for memorizing key facts, formulas, and vocabulary.

Calculator: Depending on the subjects, a scientific or graphing calculator may be necessary.

Folder or Binder: To keep papers, handouts, and completed assignments organized.

Comfortable Clothing: Both cozy clothes for relaxing and sports clothes for physical activities.

Toiletries: Including personal hygiene items, towels, and any necessary medications.

Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial for concentration and overall well-being.

Snacks and Healthy Foods: Keep energy levels up during study breaks.

Alarm Clock: Ensure you wake up on time, especially for morning tutorials.

Earphones or Headphones: Useful for listening to music or blocking out distractions.

Board Games or Playing Cards: Great for winding down and socializing in the evenings.

Comfort Items: Such as a favorite pillow, blanket, or stuffed animal for a touch of home comfort.

Stationery Kit: Includes stapler, paper clips, sticky notes, and a mini hole punch.

Chargers and Power Banks: Keep devices powered throughout the day.

The Tutorials

Courses at Oxford Science Studies are intensive. The whole point is to give you the attention and space you need to take your learning to the next level and fill in any gaps you may have. We have a structured timetable to maintain concentrated study hours during working hours, making sure to keep you on track. If you know anyone who has been to Oxford or Cambridge, you’ll see that we are essentially embracing the tutorial system, which features small study groups with expert tutors. This format ensures that nobody is falling between the cracks. Though I am biased, I would also say that the atmosphere of a small group is a rather nice one…

Tutorials are kept to 50 minutes, which in our experience is optimal for student concentration. Tutors cater to the needs of the students. Some of you may want exam practice, others will want to cover certain topics. Our tutors find a balance and make sure they are listening to the needs of the group, or the individual – depending on the group size.

Post-course electronic reports also provide detailed feedback and recommendations for further study. Our tutors, including full-time educators and examiners, bring deep subject expertise and enthusiasm to their teaching, sharing insights through blogs and sessions. Don’t worry – we are not here to out you for not working hard enough. Reports are really valuable insights into where you are currently, and what steps you can take after the course to continue your revision in a constructive way.

Exam Skills

While taking an exam has a tendency to be viewed by students as an adrenaline induced brain dump, with all of the work of 2 years simply splurging onto your exam papers, there are some practical skills that need to be developed. We run study skills workshops that include sessions on problem-solving techniques, stress management strategies, and effective essay approaches. These sessions are essential as they equip you with practical skills to enhance academic performance and overall well-being.

Why are these important, I hear you ask? Imagine going to the gym a few times and asserting that you’re ready for a marathon. Alright, you may just about hack it, but exams should be taken seriously. It may seem obvious, but your brain needs discipline, rest, good nutrition, and tactics to cope with inevitable stress. Learning how to tackle challenges, manage stress effectively, and master essay writing techniques not only improves academic outcomes, but also fosters confidence and resilience in students. These skills are invaluable for lifelong learning and personal development.

This brings me nicely onto my next point about the course…!

Getting Some Rest

While it’s tempting to dive headfirst into social activities, remember to listen to your body. Hang out with new friends, but don’t be surprised if you find yourself craving an early night’s sleep after a full day of learning and laughter. It’s all part of the experience – a delicate balance between academic intensity and self-care. It’s not unusual for even the loudest extroverts to seek the restorative sanctuary of a cozy bed after a few nights of socialising. Take the time to recover, and get back into things when you’re ready. This course is an excellent opportunity for you to develop an understanding for your personal study techniques, and how to balance that with socialising and self care. This is one of the most valuable things a course like this can teach you for life during your studies, both at school and beyond.

Independence and Agency

Turning 18 at OXSS opens up new opportunities, including the freedom to explore off-campus and manage your study schedule independently. While this aspect of adulthood is exciting, the real luxury of OXSS courses is to take advantage of your learning. Tutorials are designed not just to teach, but to empower you to take charge of your unique learning needs. Need extra help? Our tutors are always ready to assist, ensuring you feel confident and prepared, whether you’re tackling complex equations or diving deep into literary analysis. If you are stuck – ask for help! That is what we are all here for.

Independence is wonderful, but so is proactivity. This is such an incredible opportunity to speak to experts in your subject, and it is advised you make the most of their time.

Catering for Everyone

At OXSS, inclusivity is key, including dietary needs. We cater to dietary requirements – just let our team know your dietary preferences before arrival. You may want to order a cheeky takeaway here and there, but eating in hall with friends is a great bonding experience and a really good way to get you away from your studies and connect with new friends who are in the same position as you are. You can of course take some time to recharge your social battery and have some of your own time, but by and large I would encourage you to muck in with us all. There are lots of food options, and the skilled chefs on site are adept at tailoring menus to ensure every student has a meal that meets their nutritional requirements.

Evening Entertainment - ENTZ

One of the most rewarding aspects of OXSS is the sense of community that quickly forms among students. Within hours, bonds sprout effortlessly. I’ve seen lifelong friendships blossom from chance encounters during cookie-making sessions or impromptu football matches. It’s heartwarming to witness how quickly strangers become a supportive community, united by common goals and shared experiences. The evening entertainment can be a great place to develop new friendships and disconnect from stressful thoughts of exams.

In the past we have had football games; karaoke sessions; trips into town; game evenings; capture the flag sessions, and even hawk photography sessions. There is no limit to the possibilities and our ENTZ team comes with incredible energy and engagement. The positivity of the entertainment team is really contagious, and they are wonderful people to hang out with even if you don’t want to get too involved with the activity in question. Most of them are university students, so they are familiar with what you are going through in the course, and more than happy to have a natter about anything and everything.

Not every evening involves intense games or team bonding activities. We play things by ear on courses. If the majority of students need some down time, we will of course accommodate this.

A typical wholesome scene after 2 weeks of intensive course socialising:

It is the end of a long second week at the revision course. Tension had been high with mock exams looming, and students had been burning the midnight oil to revise. A group of students, exhausted yet content, gathered on the cushions. Some had their notes spread out around them, while others clutched their textbooks like pillows. The atmosphere is relaxed, very relaxed! As the nature documentary begins, narrating the life cycles of underwater creatures, the room falls into a tranquil silence. Amid the soothing blue hues of the ocean depths and the gentle movements of marine life, the students begin to nod off. It isn’t long before soft snoring breaks the quiet spell. While a good old snore may elicit a little chuckle from our supervising staff, the sight of a good snooze is a welcome sign of much needed R and R and very much encouraged. Especially when accompanied by a supply of delicious digestives and tea.

Other times things are a tad more energetic…

Picture a sunny afternoon on the field, where a spirited game of football is underway. The teams are a mix of seasoned players and enthusiastic newcomers, all eager to showcase their skills and bond over their shared love for the game.

The match kicks off with enthusiasm and a sense of camaraderie. The more experienced players take the lead, guiding the newcomers with encouragement and tips on positioning and strategy. As the game progresses, moments of skill and teamwork shine through. The seasoned players deftly maneuver the ball, demonstrating their agility and finesse, while the newcomers eagerly absorb the game’s pace and dynamics.

I’ve been involved in some matches myself. I must admit, as a petite tutor who hasn’t played football since primary school, I was full of trepidation entering a competitive scenario with a group of very competitive teenagers. While there was a great deal of excitement and energy, I will say that our lovely team captains showed real maturity and took good care of us amateurs (if I am so bold as to class myself under that title.)

Goals are always celebrated with high-fives and cheers, regardless of which team scored. It’s a good vibe, you might say. For those who were less eager to get involved, there was also a nice sense of bonding with the crowd who discussed tactics and gameplay on the sidelines. After my time on the pitch, I must admit I enjoyed the safe and familiar environment of critical discussion and analysis that was taking place on the sidelines. Or was it the singing of Taylor Swift songs I enjoyed? Either way, there was a good atmosphere both on and off the pitch!

Who must participate

If you are over 15, you do not NEED to participate in the ENTZ activities. But it would be a shame to skip all the activities. Our students usually come along for at least 3 out of the 5 evening slots. Of course, this is totally up to you if you are old enough to decide. But I would say that the ENTZ team is one of the top assets of our courses.

Life's Quirks and Comforts

Not every moment is smooth sailing. As you might expect with a full-time course, hours of focus and independent study away from home can be intimidating. Rest assured that this is not a confined place where you are forced to study, but a great opportunity to provide focus in a highly supportive and constructive environment.

I know I speak for the whole team when I say that we are totally on your side. Funnily enough, we have all been in your shoes before, and we know how intense learning can be. If you require extra support, or just hanging out after studies with some of our zen house parents and staff, who love nothing better than a cup of tea and a natter, we’ve got you covered.

Granted, courses like this are full on. We all love an early morning fire alarm…! But over time, even these drills become a quirky part of our routine. This course is all about being full on, and getting the absolute most out of your vacations. Besides, while the scream of an alarm may not be everyone’s preferred wake-up call, they do ensure that our days begin with a jolt of adrenaline.

Some students like to bring some extracurricular practice with them, for instance a musical instrument, knitting equipment or sports equipment. Go for it. I have seen some incredible crochet produced on previous courses (Easter 2025), and I am endlessly inspired by anyone who is setting aside time to refine their skills.

Bottom line, we are here to help you make the most of the course in whatever way works best for you.

To summarise what you can get from an OXSS course.

Preparing for the Future – Beyond exams, OXSS prepares students for life beyond the classroom. Independent learning skills are honed through self-directed study sessions and project work, setting a solid foundation for university life and beyond. It’s not just about passing exams; it’s about developing critical thinking, time management, and resilience – the tools needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Lifelong friends – It is quite incredible to think that many of the students who studied on our courses in previous years have since become close friends and revision buddies. It really is invaluable for us to see people form such strong connections that they take on into their future schooling careers, and beyond.

New perspective and independence – Studying within the confines of home and school can make learning seem, at times, somewhat repetitive and tedious. I have been impressed by some of the ways that a subject has come to life in discussions between students on the same revision path, and witnessing how young people influence each other’s understanding of what their education is all about in the grand scheme of things.

Don’t take our word for it!

Easter course review:

I am just emailing to say the Easter Course Week was amazing, it definitely made me feel more confident with my chosen subjects, as well as being a lot of fun, and I will be recommending it to other students at my school in the years below.
