Why study History with OXSS?

Study History A Level, AS Level, IB, GCSE and IGCSE on our revision courses.

By studying History with OXSS, you benefit from working closely with our expert tutors, who have extensive knowledge and experience with the subject. They will be able to work with you to develop your understanding of any areas you may be struggling with, as well as to improve your overall knowledge of the period you are covering.

With History, it is essential to have as broad an understanding as possible of the time period you are studying. By joining one of our revision courses, either in a small group or one-to-one class, our tutors will be able to cover topics in more detail than is often possible in a larger class at school. In doing so, you will be best placed to write with sufficient depth in your examinations to attain the higher grades.

During the application process, you will be asked to provide the exact syllabus and specification that you are studying for, whether this is for GCSE, IGCSE, IB or A Level History. This ensures that you will receive guidance that is specific to your examination during your time on our revision course.

How does OXSS ensure that I make the most of my time on the revision course?

At OXSS, our days are structured so that after each tutorial, students have a period of independent study. This allows them to work on tasks set by the tutor, such as tackling a particular essay question or analysing a primary source. This approach is perfect for studying History, as the independent work is essential for practicing and developing your written work and analytical skills. Additionally, developing your ability to work independently will serve as excellent preparation if you are considering studying History at university.

By completing independent work and then reviewing this with your tutor they will be able to guide you on how to improve, and provide feedback on your strengths and weaknesses with the subject matter. This will give you the best opportunity to grow and develop as an historian, and make tangible progress during the time you spend studying with us.

How do the Study Skills sessions supplement my History classes?

On OXSS’ Easter and Summer courses, there are daily sessions dedicated to ‘Study Skills’. These are split into essay-based and science-based classes, and are designed to help you improve your ability to perform well in exams. As a History student, you will join the essay-based sessions, where you can expect guidance on skills such as structuring or planning essays, for example, which are essential to strong performance in your History exams.

Furthermore, these classes will also provide you with tips on revision techniques and how to mentally prepare for exams, skills which are essential to develop for any subject, but especially in a subject like History which has such a large emphasis on memory and exam technique.

We won’t do the work for you, but we will help you build confidence and independence as a learner. Most students tell us that combining our help with their own revision leads to better marks — and less stress.
